North Bondi Surf Life Saving Club – More Than a Brick

An ambitious fundraising vision. A challenging engraving brief. A lasting thank you to the people who helped rebuild an iconic surf club.

A Community Comes Together

When North Bondi Surf Life Saving Club set out to rebuild its clubhouse, it drew on generations of community connection and support.

The club's 2024 Annual Report records $5.3 million in private donations towards the $7 million clubhouse redevelopment, completed in 2013.

As part of the wider fundraising initiative, the club wanted to recognise the generosity of its supporters through personalised engraved paving surrounding the new clubhouse.

Talking Stones was engaged to help bring that recognition to life.

More Than a Fundraising Brick

North Bondi understood the importance of making supporters feel connected to the project.

Different levels of financial contribution were recognised through different paver positions and inscription opportunities.

Larger contributions received more prominent recognition, helping encourage participation across the club's membership, families and business community.

The result was a fundraising approach that gave supporters something permanent and meaningful in return for their generosity.

The club managed its own fundraising administration and payment collection, while Talking Stones focused on the specialist engraving work.

The Challenge: Engraving an Unusual Material

By the time Talking Stones became involved, the redevelopment was nearing completion.

The club had already purchased large-format concrete pavers selected to complement the new building.

Unfortunately, the material was not typically used for personalised engraving, and the club had experienced difficulty finding a supplier willing to undertake the work.

Replacing the pavers would have created additional expense and potentially disrupted the project.

Talking Stones approached the challenge through practical testing rather than immediately recommending an alternative product.

Finding the Right Solution

We carried out sample engraving tests and explored different finishes to determine how the chosen concrete would respond.

This allowed the club to assess the appearance and quality of the engraving before committing to production.

Once the approach was agreed, Talking Stones engraved hundreds of large-format concrete pavers, worked with the club's design partners and coordinated third-party delivery.

The project required technical expertise, flexibility and careful coordination within a limited timeframe.

Most importantly, the club was able to retain its originally selected paving material.

A Lasting Thank You to Supporters

The completed engraved paving became part of the clubhouse surroundings, recognising the people and businesses who contributed to the redevelopment.

Rather than displaying donor names on a separate plaque or honour board, the recognition was incorporated into the physical environment.

Supporters could see their contribution acknowledged at a place that held genuine meaning for them.

The project demonstrated how personalised engraving can transform an everyday building material into a lasting expression of community appreciation.
