SANDSTONE PRODUCT CARE AND MAINTENANCE

All our products are made from natural sandstone and are suitable for use outdoors.  As with any natural stone, it can be prone to weathering and excessive moisture build up, potentially developing mould and algae growth.

Here are a few tips to help your product look as good as the day it arrived.

Try to:

  • Place the product in the sunlight, preferably somewhere with good air circulation
  • Place the product under cover to limit rain exposure
  • Elevate the product off the ground by using plaque stands, a plinth or other means.

Try not to:

  • Place the product in constant contact with the ground
  • Place the product in constant shade or in a damp position
  • Put garden soil or mulch in contact with the sandstone product

DO NOT

  • Use high pressure water to clean the product
  • Use strong chemicals to clean the surface
  • Scrub the surface with any abrasive brushes

Cleaning:

  • If you need to clean dirt off the product, use warm water with a mild detergent.  Avoid scrubbing the surface, particularly where it’s engraved.
  • If you need to clean mould or algae from the product - using eye protection and gloves, apply a solution of 2 parts water and 1 part chlorine to the surface, then rinse thoroughly with clean water and avoid scrubbing the surface. Then re-assess the position of the product.

If you have purchased a sandstone marker or headstone, we have applied an initial coat of “Crommelin Stain Guard” to help protect the stone and engraving.  We recommend further coats be applied relative to the environment in which your product is situated.
