Natural Stone Engraving – Architectural Specifications
Introduction
Talking Stones provides custom natural stone engraving for architectural, landscape and commercial projects throughout Australia.
This guide provides material guidance, engraving recommendations and design considerations for architects, landscape architects, builders, councils and commercial designers preparing project documentation. Adapt the specifications to suit the selected stone, design and installation requirements.
Material Guidance and Finishes
Natural Sandstone
Material: Natural sandstone, with stone selection, dimensions and thickness confirmed to suit the project.
Standard finish: Honed. Other finishes may be considered subject to approval and material suitability.
Engraving: Permanent recessed engraving.
Recommended engraving depth: Approximately 5 mm for lettering approximately 25 mm high, increasing proportionally for larger lettering where suitable. Confirm the final depth against the lettering, design and selected stone.
Natural Granite
Material: Natural granite, with stone selection, dimensions and thickness confirmed to suit the project.
Standard finish: Polished, with honed finish available as an option.
Engraving: Permanent recessed engraving.
Recommended engraving depth: 3 mm, subject to design. Confirm the final depth against the lettering, design and selected stone.
Engraving and Paint-Fill Options
All lettering, graphics and identification details shall be permanently recessed into the selected natural stone.
For both sandstone and granite, engraving may be left natural or paint filled, subject to project requirements and material suitability. Where paint fill is specified, nominate the required colour and confirm suitability before manufacture.
Lettering size, line weights, artwork detail and engraving depth shall be reviewed for suitability with the selected stone before production. Do not assume a single engraving depth is suitable for every design.
Fixing and Installation Considerations
Fixing and installation details shall be nominated by the project designer to suit the stone dimensions, thickness, location, substrate and project requirements.
Confirm whether the engraved stone is to be installed as a freestanding element, inset into a surface or fixed to a supporting substrate. Any mechanical fixings, adhesive systems, supports and associated details shall be suitable for the selected stone and installation.
Final dimensions, fixing positions, supports and installation responsibilities shall be confirmed before manufacture. Structural or installation requirements shall be assessed by an appropriately qualified project professional where required.
Artwork and Manufacturing Approval
All dimensions, lettering, graphics, layouts, stone selections, finishes, engraving depths, paint-fill colours and fixing requirements shall be confirmed before manufacture.
Final artwork and manufacturing details shall be submitted for approval before production commences.
Ready-to-Use Architectural Specification
Architects and specifiers can copy the following wording into their project documentation. Select the appropriate material clause, remove the unused alternative and adjust project-specific requirements before issue.
