Glass Engraving – Architectural Specifications

Introduction

Talking Stones provides custom glass engraving for architectural and decorative applications, including commercial signage and commemorative installations.

This guide provides material guidance, engraving recommendations and design considerations for architects, landscape architects, builders, councils and commercial designers preparing project documentation. Adapt the specification to suit the intended application, selected glass and installation requirements. Final suitability must be confirmed by the project designer or relevant glazing professional.

Material Guidance and Finishes

Annealed Glass

Material: Annealed glass (non-toughened) only. Do not specify toughened or tempered glass for engraving.

Thickness and dimensions: Glass thickness, dimensions and suitability must be confirmed for each project, taking account of the proposed engraving and intended application.

Engraving: Permanent recessed engraving.

Nominal engraving depth: Approximately 3 mm, adjustable subject to glass thickness, design and material suitability. Confirm the final depth before production; do not assume this depth is suitable for every glass panel or design.

Standard finish: Natural frosted appearance.

Optional finish: Paint-filled engraving in any nominated colour, subject to confirmation.

Engraving and Paint-Fill Options

Lettering, graphics and identification details shall be permanently recessed into the selected annealed glass. Engraving has a natural frosted appearance as standard, with paint-filled engraving available in any nominated colour, subject to confirmation.

Lettering size, line weights, artwork detail, engraving depth and the relationship between engraved and unengraved areas shall be reviewed against the selected glass thickness and project requirements before production. Where paint fill is required, nominate the colour and confirm its suitability for the intended application.

Applications

  • Decorative architectural glass panels.
  • Commercial signage.
  • Recognition and commemorative installations.
  • Other suitable architectural applications, subject to project-specific assessment.

These applications are not a statement of suitability for every location. Annealed glass must not be specified for locations requiring safety glazing.

Design Considerations

Confirm the intended location and use, panel dimensions, glass thickness, edge treatment, engraving layout, nominal engraving depth, finish and fixing requirements during design development.

Consider viewing distance, lettering size, contrast, background and lighting when preparing artwork. Confirm the engraved face and viewing orientation so that lettering and graphics are read as intended.

Coordinate artwork with panel edges, supports and fixing positions. The project designer or relevant glazing professional must assess the suitability of the engraved glass for the intended use, including the effect of recessed engraving on the selected glass.

Do not nominate annealed glass for an application that requires safety glazing. If safety glazing is required, refer the application back to the project designer or relevant glazing professional rather than substituting toughened or tempered glass for engraving.

Fixing and Installation Considerations

Glass selection, fixing methods, edge treatment and installation must be appropriate for the intended application and comply with applicable Australian glazing and safety requirements.

Fixing and installation details shall be nominated by the project designer or relevant glazing professional to suit the panel dimensions, glass thickness, location, substrate and project requirements. Confirm suitable supports, fixing positions and any associated installation systems before production.

Installation guidance on this page does not establish that annealed glass is suitable for a particular location. Final suitability, including any requirement for safety glazing, must be confirmed by the project designer or relevant glazing professional.

Coordinate final panel dimensions, edge treatment, fixing details, site conditions and installation responsibilities before production. Protect glass edges and engraved surfaces during handling and installation, using handling and installation arrangements confirmed by the relevant glazing professional.

Artwork and Production Approval

All dimensions, lettering, graphics, layouts, glass selections, thicknesses, edge treatments, engraving depths, finishes, paint-fill colours and fixing requirements shall be confirmed before production.

Final artwork must be submitted for approval and approved before production commences. Project-specific material suitability and installation details must also be confirmed by the project designer or relevant glazing professional.

Ready-to-Use Architectural Specification

Architects and specifiers can copy the following wording into their project documentation. Complete the project-specific selections and have the project designer or relevant glazing professional confirm suitability before issue.

MATERIAL AND FINISH

ENGRAVING REQUIREMENTS

All lettering, graphics and identification details shall be permanently recessed into the selected annealed glass. Nominal engraving depth shall be approximately 3 mm, adjustable subject to glass thickness, design and material suitability. Final engraving depth shall be confirmed for the selected glass and approved artwork before production.

FIXING, INSTALLATION AND SAFETY

Glass selection, fixing methods, edge treatment and installation shall be appropriate for the intended application and comply with applicable Australian glazing and safety requirements. Annealed glass shall not be specified for locations requiring safety glazing.

Fixing arrangements, supports, edge treatment and installation systems shall be detailed in approved project documentation. Final suitability of the engraved glass and installation shall be confirmed by the project designer or relevant glazing professional before production and installation.
