This guide provides material guidance, engraving requirements and installation considerations for architects, landscape architects, builders and councils preparing project documentation. Adapt the specification to suit the selected paver, design, location and project requirements.

Material Guidance and Selection

Materials: Clay pavers and concrete pavers.

Paver dimensions and thickness: Subject to project requirements and material suitability.

Paver selection: Confirm the material, dimensions, thickness, colour and surface finish to suit the intended application and proposed engraving.

Engraving: Permanent recessed engraving.

Standard engraving depth: 4 mm for both clay and concrete pavers.

Engraving finish: Natural recessed engraving or paint-filled engraving, as specified for the project.

Confirm the suitability of the selected paver for engraving and its intended installation before finalising project documentation.

Engraving and Paint-Fill Options

All lettering, graphics and identification details shall be permanently recessed into the selected paver to a standard engraving depth of 4 mm for both clay and concrete pavers.

Engraving may be left natural or paint filled. Where paint fill is required, nominate the colour and confirm its suitability for the selected paver and project requirements before production.

Lettering size, graphics, layout and artwork detail shall be reviewed for suitability with the selected paver. Confirm the location and orientation of engraved pavers within the overall paving design.

Suitable Applications

Engraved pavers may be specified for public spaces, commemorative walkways, donor recognition, landscape features and architectural projects. Select pavers and installation details appropriate to the intended use and site conditions.

Fixing and Installation Considerations

Final paving preparation and installation methods shall be confirmed by the project designer or installer to suit the selected paver, site conditions and applicable project requirements.

Paving preparation: Confirm the paving layout, set-out, finished levels, supporting base and preparation requirements before installation. Coordinate engraved paver positions and text orientation with the approved layout.

Bedding and support: Specify an appropriate bedding and supporting system for the selected clay or concrete pavers and their intended use. Confirm bedding, joints, edge restraints and any associated installation details with the project designer or installer.

Drainage: Coordinate paving levels, falls and drainage details with the overall landscape and civil design. The installation shall address drainage requirements for the site.

Slip resistance: The project designer shall confirm the required slip resistance for the intended location and use, including consideration of the selected paver surface, engraving and any paint fill. Do not assume that engraving or paint fill establishes a particular slip-resistance rating.

Project requirements: Confirm applicable loading, access, paving and installation requirements as part of the project documentation. Any required performance evidence shall be confirmed for the selected materials and installation system.

Artwork and Manufacturing Approval

All paver selections, dimensions, lettering, graphics, layouts, engraving finishes, paint-fill colours and set-out requirements shall be confirmed before production.

Final artwork must be submitted for approval before production commences. Manufacturing details and the approved paver schedule shall be confirmed before production.

Ready-to-Use Architectural Specification

Architects and specifiers can copy the following wording into their project documentation and adjust project-specific requirements before issue. Nominate clay or concrete pavers, the engraving finish and the installation requirements in the approved documentation.

MATERIAL AND FINISH

Provide engraved clay or concrete pavers as nominated in approved project documentation. Paver selection, dimensions, thickness, colour and surface finish shall suit the project requirements and material suitability.

Engraving shall be left as natural recessed engraving or paint filled in the nominated colour, as specified and confirmed suitable for the selected paver.

ENGRAVING REQUIREMENTS

All lettering, graphics and identification details shall be permanently recessed into the selected paver. Standard engraving depth shall be 4 mm for both clay and concrete pavers.

Wording, graphics, lettering sizes, layout and orientation shall comply with approved project documentation and final approved artwork.

FIXING AND INSTALLATION

Paving preparation, bedding, supporting base, joints, edge restraints, finished levels and drainage shall suit the selected pavers, intended use and applicable project requirements. Final installation methods shall be confirmed by the project designer or installer.

The project designer shall confirm the required slip resistance and the suitability of the selected paver surface, engraving finish and any paint fill for the intended location and use. Engraved paver positions and orientation shall comply with the approved paving layout.

ARTWORK APPROVAL

All paver selections, dimensions, lettering, graphics, layouts, engraving finishes, paint-fill colours and set-out requirements shall comply with approved project documentation. Final artwork shall be submitted for approval before production commences. Manufacturing details and the paver schedule shall be confirmed before production.
